Memphis Recap

There’s nothing like experiencing something live. This trip to the Folk Alliance was so inspiring for the 7 of us because not only were we able to make some amazing connections with other artists and companies in the music biz but we also got to experience the heart of Memphis.

On the final day we headed over to Sun Studios and stood in the room where the first records were made for Elvis, Johnny Cash, B.B. King, and a slew of others. It was magic to be able to hear the very first recordings that have never been released of Elvis singing his first “demo”. U2’s Rattle and Hum was also recorded there later in the 80s and we ended up singing a quick version of Andrew Smith’s “Man in Black” which is a tune written for the great Johnny Cash. The wild thing is that the room has been left virtually in its original condition with the black X’s made of tape left on the ground where these old legends stood and sang tunes that altered music forever.

Here are a few of our favorite artists, quotes, and experiences from the fest:

Over the Rhine
Loved this line in one of their songs “All of my favorite people are broken…”

L’Angelus
A great 4 piece brother and sister combo who came into our room and watched most of our Sat. night showcase. One of the guys tried showing us how to do a Russian dance and ended up splitting his pants open but their show was so full of life and energy with vocal harmonies that are air tight. Their song “Rice and Gravy” put a smile on everyone’s face.

Ron Sexsmith
This guy delivers. What a voice. Here’s a live version of him at the Festival singing one of his latest singles “Love Shines“.

Kim Churchill
Australia delay and aggression – unbelievable what 1 man with a guitar, harmonica, and some effects pedal can do.

JP Hoe
He was showcasing in the Manitoba Music room across the hall from his. His voice is as powerful as a cement truck. Great tunes.

We also made some great connections with people like Gene Shay (started WXPN radio & Philli Folk Festival), Canadian Folk and Roots, and Bil Vorndick who took us downtown Beale St. for some ribs that will never be forgotten. We didn’t have much luck on the transportation side of things but we’re proud to be better at playing music together than catching flights. What a trip.

We were streaming all of our showcases live and everything is available here to watch: http://livestream.com/tribehouse
